Reiki known as The Usui System of Natural Healing in the western world was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui was primarily a Buddhist, although he studied many religious systems. Through Dr. Usui teaching career, he taught many people his system Reiki.
Reiki is a Japanese system of hands on healing as well as a spiritual method of spiritual growth and transformation.
Reiki is passed from one person to the next in the form of lineage tradition. What this means is that a student requires the necessary empowerments, or a series of attunements, from a qualified teacher of the original Reiki tradition.
The actual words “Rei” and “Ki” are thought to originate from “Raku-Kei” in the Japanese language. Raku is the vertical energy flow through the body, Ki is the horizontal energy flow through the body
Rei – Spiritual Wisdom
The word “Rei” means Universal and is a general definition. “Rei” in Kanji (Japanese script or ideograms) has several levels of meanings and interpretations from the mundane to the esoteric. Most Reiki practitioners interpret it as the Higher Spiritual Consciousness or All-Knowing God-Force, and as such this accepted meaning is more accurate.
Ki – The Life Force
It is the Vital Life Force that flows through, all living things. “Ki” surrounds and animates all life and is the primary source of our thoughts, emotions and spiritual existence. Martial artists use “Ki” in physical and mental development. Shaman, past and present, have used the same energy for spiritual development and awareness. “Ki” is employed by all healers, regardless of discipline. It is the non-physical energy that can be accumulated by the body and guided by the will.
